Air care benefited from a number of factors at the end of the review period. Rising disposable income levels and an expanding mid-income group resulted in more consumers being able to afford these products on a regular basis and also encouraged many to trade up within air care. Strong residential construction towards the end of the review period also resulted in many urban consumers moving into attractive new homes, which they are keen to keep in good condition and smelling fresh. In addition, urbanisation is resulting in increasingly crowded cities and homes, with many thus using air care more frequently in order to tackle odours.

Competitive Landscape

A trio of strong multinationals lead air care, with SC Johnson and Sara Lee accounting for 20% of value each in 2014 and Reckitt Benckiser accounting for 16% share. These players benefit from offering high quality products and trusted brands, such as SC Johnson's Brise, Sara Lee's Ambi Pur and Reckitt Benckiser's Air Wick. These brands also offer a wide range of formats across most areas of air care. All three players meanwhile gained share slightly in 2014 over the previous year, thanks to widening distribution and rising economic confidence, which encouraged many mid- to high-income consumers to trade up.

Industry Prospects

Air care is expected to benefit from ongoing growth in disposable income levels and rising urbanisation in the forecast period, alongside ongoing residential construction. There will thus be more consumers who can afford to buy air care, while new homes are also expected to prompt stronger sales to house-proud Cameroonians. Rapid growth in the country's cities will meanwhile create a greater perceived need for air care in many households, as consumers seek to avoid the smells associated with growing industrial pollution and overcrowding. Thanks to these trends, air care is expected to see a stronger 4% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices in the forecast period, up from just 2% CAGR in the review period. All product areas are meanwhile set to see volume growth strengthen.
