Street Stalls/Kiosks in Colombia: New research report available at Fast Market Research

Published: Mon Aug 24 2015

In 2014, street stalls/kiosks’ sales grew by 4% in current value. The category benefited from the higher rents faced by competing formats, but was negatively affected by stricter controls in the main cities on the use of public spaces. High rent in the main cities, as a consequence of the scarcity of buildable land, particularly in Bogotá, is the main constraint on overall foodservice development. According to the Departamento Nacional de Estadisticas (DANE), the national statistics agency, during 2014 the price of new residential housing per square metre grew by 10%, which, according to industry sources, was similar to the increase for commercial property. The market responded to this trend through the development of small sized formats, such as kiosks, which are gaining visibility in the retail channel, with popular products such as bakery items.

The category is dominated by unlicensed and independent small players, which are oriented to selling affordable food quickly and conveniently. Independent players with outlets in modern retail channels are gaining visibility, especially those in bakery outlets, which are present in the modern channel, such as Perrushi (sushi) which even has a delivery service. There are also some chains with wide coverage, such as the craft ice cream operator Stecco, which has at least 15 outlets in the main cities.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, street stall/kiosks’ sales will continue expanding, with a forecast 1% CAGR in constant value terms, driven by increasing disposable incomes and the rise of smaller sized formats from some foodservice players. Over the forecast period, it is expected that the Colombian economy will continue expanding in a stable manner, which will allow the continuation of poverty reduction, increasing the consumer base in the low- and low-middle income segments.
