This resulted in explosive growth in the sales of RYO in 2010, with almost double the sales compared with 2009, but when the government also started taxing RYO, the migration turned in the other direction and currently sales of RYO are close to previous levels before the review period.

Competitive Landscape

The Croatian company Duhanka Zagreb doo continues to lead the category with a 47% volume share in 2014. It lost one percentage point from 2013 but is still firmly ahead of the competition, which has also lost share.

Industry Prospects

The biggest influence on the category in the coming years will be increased taxation, which will have two opposite effects. On the one hand, price increases will motivate some consumers to quit or search for cheaper alternatives. On the other hand, the trend of cigarette consumers switching to smoking tobacco will continue. Even with price increases, smoking tobacco will remain the cheapest legal smoking product.
