Rtds/High-Strength Premixes in Portugal - New Market Research Report

Portuguese producers of wine-based RTDs benefited from a ruling by the European Parliament in January 2014, which stated that only products produced in Spain and Portugal could be called "sangria." This ruling covers marketing and packaging, with similar products produced in other countries only able to use the term if they also qualify it with "flavoured wine-based drink" and state the country of origin. This is due to the term "sangria" originating on the Iberian Peninsula.

Competitive Landscape

Bacardi-Martini is the leading player in RTDs/high-strength premixes, accounting for close to 50% total volume share in 2014 and extending its share marginally over the previous year. This is due to the company's range of strong brands in spirit-based RTDs, with Eristoff Ice and Metz alone accounting for 22% and 18% share and the Bacardi range reaching 10% share. These brands benefit from a wide distribution reach in the on- and off-trade, while Eristoff Ice and Bacardi also benefit from a strong international presence, thus attracting many consumers.

Industry Prospects

Following the EU ruling on sangria in 2014, with only Spanish and Portuguese players able to call their products sangria, there is expected to be a stronger focus on quality in this area in the forecast period. This trend will also be encouraged by the strong success of craft beer seen in Portugal towards the end of the review period, with players seeking to offer "craft sangria." Spanish brand Lolea is for example a strong contender for success in this area, having won silver at the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America awards in 2014. This brand is pushing for wider distribution in the on-trade in Portugal and is expected to benefit from its fashionable and distinctive red and cream spotty bottles. This brand also offers clarea, which is similar to sangria but produced from white wine, with the novelty and quality of this product likely to attract many consumers if the brand can broaden distribution reach and consumer awareness.
