There is a longstanding tradition of smoking cigars/cigarillos in the Dominican Republic. Since colonial times, tobacco was at the core of the Dominican economy, reflected in the fact that one of only five tobacco factories in the whole Spanish Empire in the 18th century was in Santo Domingo. As a consequence, consumption of cigars was always welcomed and appreciated. In many ways and in traditional circles, tobacco connoisseurship always equated to pride for all things Dominican. Higher-income Dominican men embrace the smoking of premium cigars and that is reflected in the spread of speciality shops and cigar clubs. Another pocket of consumption comes from lower-income (also male) Dominicans. This group prefers machine-manufactured standard and small cigars at lower price points, and cigarillos. They mostly buy from independent small grocers. A third pocket of consumption comes from tourists. Because of the country’s growing reputation for having some of the finest handmade cigars in the world, most tourists buy cigars for consumption during their visit and to take away and, as such, they are the main consumers of handmade, premium cigars sold in the country.

Competitive Landscape

Industry Prospects

Cigars is expected to see a value CAGR at constant 2014 prices of 3% over the forecast period. The 3% CAGR for cigars excluding cigarillos will be driven by the increase in tourists, given the government’s plans to more than double the number of tourists by 2020 to 10 million per year, and an increase in the expenditure per tourist given the growing reputation of Dominican cigars as the finest in the world. The 6% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices for cigarillos will be driven by an increasing transition of cigarette smokers to cigarillos as comparative pricing stopped being and never will be detrimental for cigarillos, and as the category gets more active with more brand offerings, distribution and activities.
