Cigar smoking has a long history in Bulgaria, but its image is very different from that of cigarettes and smoking tobacco. While cigarettes are the everyday smoking product, cigars (large, standard, small and even cigarillos) are seen as luxury. They are bought for special occasions and as a treat, even by people who are not regular smokers. The positive publicity about cigar smoking in the press and the mysterious and luxury image of cigar smokers boosted the category’s performance.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape in cigars is not dynamic. There are only a handful of cigars importers and distributors in Bulgaria, but at the brand level the category is very fragmented. In contrast to cigarettes, there was little newcomer activity and the key importers and distributors remain the same (there is no cigar production in Bulgaria). Kaliman Karibe is the dominant player both in cigars excluding cigarillos and cigarillos with a 49% and 57% share of volume sales respectively. The company owns a large distribution network of specialised retail outlets, as well as exclusive rights for the import of some of the most highly valued brands on the market – particularly in cigars excluding cigarillos.

Industry Prospects

Cigars is expected to continue its positive volume growth in the forecast period and increase by a 2% CAGR. The rate is expected to be similar to that of the review period. Cigars were not as frequently smoked as cigarettes and only reserved for special occasions. This renders demand more static and smoothly developing. The South American and Caribbean culture, with Latin American dancing themed parties and positive images of the lifestyle coming from this region will continue to influence the category positively.
