Our forecasts for Singapore are mixed in the near term. Although we expect that air freight volumes will enjoy a positive - albeit fairly sedate - expansion, we envisage a moderate decline in road haulage. This disparity can be explained by the fact that while Singapore's road haulage volumes deal almost exclusively with the domestic market, air freight in the city state is geared hugely towards international transhipment, with Changi International one of the world's largest airports. Nevertheless, over the medium term growth will be predominately positive, although lacklustre, reflecting in part how developed a market Singapore is.

Although real growth in Singapore's total trade will be fairly slow in 2015, at just 1.4%, we expect that it will pick up over the remainder of our medium-term forecast period, averaging 4.2% from 2016 to 2019. We note that as a major global transhipment hub, volumes handled on the small city state's freight transport network are not solely geared towards domestic needs, but can be seen as a barometer of the global economy. With the US and UK economies picking up, this is positive news for Singapore's freight sector.

Where previously we had envisaged growth of 2.8% in road freight volumes in Singapore in 2015, we now expect that volumes will actually undergo a decline, albeit and extremely modest one at -0.6%. This adjustment to our near-term forecast is not something that should concern companies operating in the country, however. Our expectation is that growth in road haulage will be broadly flat this year, due to an alteration in our real GDP predictions by our Asia Country Risk team. In 2016 we expect that growth will be positive, but will once again be largely flat, with our expectation for a 0.9% increase in volumes. The road freight sector in Singapore differs from that of air freight and the country's enormous maritime port, in that it is not geared as much to transhipment as to domestic needs.
