A turbine is a mechanical device consisting of revolving rotors and blades, which transforms rotational energy into usable energy. The fluid used for the rotation can be steam, gas, or other combustion products such as CO2 and carbon monoxide. There are three types of turbines: steam, gas, and CCGT. Steam turbine extracts thermal energy from steam and converts it into mechanical energy. Gas turbine is generally used in gas-fired power plants where an internal combustion engine is placed, in which the fuel is mixed with air and ignited. Because of the growing awareness about the environmental pollution caused by thermal power plants, most of the newly constructed gas-fired power plants are CCGT plants.

Technavio's analysts forecast the turbine market in Indonesia to grow at a CAGR of 8.7% over the period 2014-2019.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio's team said: "Being one of the largest producers of coal and gas resources in the world, Indonesia is registering a continuous rise in power consumption, which should more than double by 2022. The country consumed 189 TWh of power in 2013 and this may reach 386 TWh in 2022, growing at an average of 8.4% per year."

According to the report, Indonesia has significant power generation resources and is one of the largest exporters of coal in the world. Thermal power was the largest energy source in the country with a share of 87% in 2014 in the overall installed capacity. This major share can be attributed to the vast coal and gas resources available in the country.

Further, the report states that the country's energy market has structural problems regarding power supply, as state-owned power distributor PT PLN is heavily dependent on government subsidies (as the cost of electricity sold is not supported by government subsidies).

The key players in the Turbine Market in Indonesia are Dongfang Electric Corp. (DEC), General Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Shanghai Electric Corp., Siemens AG while other prominent vendors include Harbin, Nanjing Turbine & Electric Machinery, and Shanghai Electric

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
