A decline in both the port of Hong Kong's tonnage and container throughput displays how the slowdown in China's economic growth story is negatively impacting the ports operations. The port functions as a transhipment point for China and so is exposed more than most facilities to the country's fortunes.

So far in 2015 throughput at the port of Hong Kong has declined, with BMI projecting that volumes for both tonnage and container will be down y-o-y for the whole of 2015. The fact that China's economic slowdown is forecast to continue over the medium term (2015-2019) will continue to place downside pressure to the port's throughput. In fact BMI is projecting another year of container throughput decline in 2016 and that volumes at the port will struggle to expand by more than 1% for the rest of the forecast period (until 2019).

Another longer term worry for the port of Hong Kong's throughput outlook is that its role in China's supply chains will decrease. China is encouraging more direct traffic to its mainland ports, with Hong Kong's rival, fellow Pearl River Delta port, Shenzhen, now handing more containers than Hong Kong. As more containers continue to go direct into and out of China, the need for Hong Kong's transhipment role will decrease.

Headline Industry Data

2015 port of Hong Kong tonnage throughput forecast to decline by 2.5%, over the medium term we project a 3% increase.

2015 port of Hong Kong container throughput forecast to decline by 12.4%, over the medium term we project a 10% decline.

2015 total trade growth forecast at 0.95%.

Key Industry Trends

Hong Kong Falls Behind Another Mainland Port : China's decreasing use of transhipment, in favour of direct calls will see Hong Kong lose its position to another mainland port. Hong Kong lost it global third place for container throughput to Shenzhen in 2013 and in 2015 is set to fall into fifth place, with China's port of Ningbo-Zhoushan projected to overtake the port in 2015.
