There seems to be no end in sight for the fall of the once popular cider/perry in Lithuania. Some industry sources go as far as admitting that drinkers are simply no longer interested in the drink and naturally look for other alcoholic drinks. Most of the drinkers were females, who can now choose from a lot of alternatives, such as sparkling wine and still wine, together with female-orientated weissbier and even drinks traditionally considered masculine, such as rum and gin. Waning interest in cider/perry is also determined by recent price increases as a result of higher excise rates. Cider/perry was amongst the drinks hurt the most after rates were raised disproportionally at the start of 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Švyturys Utenos Alus led all companies in cider with 37% share of volume sales. In addition to its well-established Kiss brand, it owns the rights to Somersby, a premium brand. Švyturys Utenos Alus is a leader in beer and uses its strength to get additional revenue from cider. Similarly, Volfas Engelman, the country’s third-largest beer maker, ranked second in cider with 34% share of volume sales in 2014. This is good news for beer companies as they get an additional revenue stream, but hardly so for cider drinkers, because these companies do not have high stakes in the category.

Indecision by companies as to whether it is worth investing in cider brands is a serious threat to the category. The culture of consumption is growing by the year in most other alcoholic drinks categories. The more time passes, the less appealing will cider look to consumers.
