Singapore Infrastructure Report Q4 2015 - New Study Released

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Sep 08 2015

We expect growth for Singapore's construction sector to moderate over the coming years, as softening residential property demand, a weaker export outlook, and longer construction periods will be a drag on growth. Consequently, we forecast the sector to grow by an annual average of 2.8% between 2015 and 2019, which represents a significant slowdown from the 10-year historical average growth rate of 8.8% registered between 2005 and 2014 annually.

Key Trends And Developments

We believe that Singapore's construction sector will continue to moderate over the coming years, and forecast the sector to grow by an annual average of 2.8% between 2015 and 2019. This represents a significant slowdown from the 10-year historical average growth rate of 8.8% registered between 2005 and 2014 annually.

The slowdown is largely attributed to softening residential property demand, which will have a knock-on impact on the residential building segment. At the same time, stricter immigration policies, and a weaker export outlook will limit construction activity over the coming quarters.

A bright spot within the sector will be public infrastructure which include civil engineering projects. Major developments include the Mandai integrated wildlife and nature heritage project and development of the Jurong Lake District.

We believe 2020 will be a turning point for the construction sector, largely driven by government plans to double the country's urban railway network from the current 178km to about 360km by 2030.
