New Market Research Report: Hungary Infrastructure Report Q4 2015

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Sep 09 2015

We expect slower growth in Hungary's construction sector from 2016 onwards as the government's stimulus for the infrastructure sector comes to an end. EU funding will continue to support the sector - particularly strategic road and rail projects, although we caution the EU probe into cartel allegations in road construction could damage relations with a key financier in the European Commission.

Strong growth in Hungary's construction sector is not expected to be long term as we expect a rising fiscal deficit to necessitate a drawback in public investment. It is also likely there will be a slowdown in spending during 2015, as the government enforces spending cuts. Between 2016-2024, we expect construction sector real growth to average 3% per year.

Key Trends And Developments

The Hungarian government halted the construction of the M4 motorway's section connecting Abony and Fegyvernek following suspected cartel activity. In April 2015 The European commission had raised issues pertaining to alleged cartel activity. Civil engineering projects have been the primary drivers of the construction sector rebound in 2014, with road and railway projects in particular, driving the civil engineering growth. Although the residential sector too has shown strong growth with the construction of buildings estimated to be up 6.5% in 2014 compared to 2013, the increase of new orders has been subdued since June 2014 and this could be a drag on growth in 2015.
