With the increasing cat population and the rise of internet retailing, more imported brands of cat food entered into China in 2014 due to the opportunities for profit. Although the giant Mars Foods (China) Co continued to lead the category, the imported brands which many of them were first introduced into China gained significant increase due to reliable quality. Although volume sales of such brands were much lower than those owned by Mars Foods (China) Co, their high unit prices led to current value growth of cat food. In addition, the ongoing strong performance of Mars Foods (China) Co further supported growth in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

The top three players Mars Foods (China) Co, Royal Canin Au Yu (Shanghai) Pet Food Co and Nestlé (China) accounted for the dominant share of cat food sales in China in 2014. Although domestic players such as Shanghai Bridge Petcare Co and Tianjin Ken-Canpo Animal Medicament Health Product Co performed strongly in 2014 and tried to narrow the gap to the three leading players, there was still a long way to go for these domestic players to overturn the lead of international companies. The top three companies accounted for a dominant share of sales of cat food, not only because of years of experience with widespread sales networks in the country, but also because they continued to focus on new product developments and on providing a wide product portfolio to meet the various changing demands of consumers. In addition, due to years of leading the category, they had strong reputations within cat food and were foremost in pet owners’ minds. As a result, the competitive landscape is set to see little change in 2015.
