New Report Available: France Food & Drink Report Q4 2015

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Sep 16 2015

Following three years of stagnation, during which headline GDP growth averaged just 0.3%, we believe the French economy is poised for moderate consumer-led growth acceleration over the next two years. We now forecast real GDP growth of 1.3 % in 2015 and 1.4 % in 2016. Consumer confidence has picked up since early 2015 , as French households appear to be benefiting from low oil prices and the associated boost to real wage growth. Given that consumer spending is the traditional driver of the French economy, this bodes well for growth momentum over the remainder of 2015. T he importance of the food industry for the economy and the fact that France is one of the few European countries with a growing, young population will leave food consumption growth relatively steady over the coming years.

Headline Industry Trends

Pernod Ricard Sales Up, Profits Down : France-based alcoholic drinks producer Pernod Ricard has posted a 2% rise in sales for FY14/15, helped by rising sales of champagne and Irish whiskey. However, profits took a hit, plunging to EUR861mn (USD974mn) from EUR1.02bn (USD1.14bn) in 2014, due to a EUR652mn (USD734.28mn) impairment on Absolut vodka. Revenue increased 8% to EUR8.56bn (USD9.64bn), a reversal of a 7% decline in 2014. A weak euro gave a big boost to revenue as sales abroad counted for more when changed back into the company's home currency.
