New market study, "Spain Petrochemicals Report Q4 2015", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Sep 21 2015

Spain's chemicals and petrochemicals industry continues its strong recovery, approaching levels seen before the collapse in output in 2013. Weak end-use markets in Spain along with a lacklustre eurozone market pose significant risks to the sector, although the process of restructuring over the past two years puts it in a better position to face up to any volatility and downturn.

In H115, chemicals output rose 3.5% y-o-y, down from 4.6% in 2014 but still above the economic trend curve. Meanwhile, rubber and plastic production grew 6.1%, up from 4.6%, indicating a robust performance from the petrochemicals industry. BMI is confident that growth will follow this trend in H215, but could face downside pressures going into 2016 in the event of the Greek crisis worsening or China's downturn slipping into a crisis.

The country's domestic markets are seeing uneven growth with construction falling behind the automotive industry. The former represents the large bulk of PVC and polypropylene (PP) pipe consumption while the latter requires a diverse range of products including PP, polyurethanes (PUs) and synthetic rubbers. With construction stagnating, it will be the solid growth in the automotive industry that stimulates petrochemicals demand with a resultant pull on certain market segments.

With the economic recovery remaining on a low-growth trajectory over the next few years, Spain will struggle to generate petrochemicals output growth from exports while domestic consumption will remain lacklustre and insufficient to compensate for this slowdown. Domestic household deleveraging limits any improvements in consumer spending on domestically manufactured end-use products. On the upside, it is unlikely the local market will contract any further with pent-up demand likely to be released, although it will take years to return to pre-recession levels.
