New market study, "Dog Food in the Netherlands", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Oct 02 2015

Dog ownership in the Netherlands remained stable during the review period. This spurred the healthy performance of dog food in all categories. Dry dog food remained a favourite with most Dutch pet owners recording higher volume growth than wet food in 2014. Dry and wet dog food registered value growth of 3% and 2%, respectively. Wet dog food carries a higher unit price making it more of a ‘premium’ product.

Competitive Landscape

Multinational companies remained leaders in dog food in the Netherlands in 2014. Nestlé Purina Petcare Nederland BV maintained its leading position during the review period, followed closely by Mars Nederland. Despite taking the leading positions, both Nestlé Purina Petcare and Mars Petfood continued to lose value shares in 2014. Instead, local manufacturers such as Prins Petfoods BV and Vitakraft Nederland BV enjoyed steady growth in value as Dutch people chose national products in favour of international brands. In addition, private label took a share of the value due to its competitively lower prices. Albert Heijn was one such company which saw considerable growth as it offers private label dog food. Nonetheless, these multinational corporations continued to invest in promoting their brands and adding new products.
