Category volume sales declined by 3% in 2014. There is not a strong tradition of cigar smoking in Ireland. Traditionally, cigars were smoked in restaurants after meals. However, the ban on smoking meant this was no longer possible. In addition, unlike cigarettes, cigars take a longer amount of time to smoke, and with the often inclement Irish weather, few have the patience to sit outside in the wet or cold to smoke a cigar.

Competitive Landscape

In 2014, there were five main players in cigars excluding cigarillos in Ireland: Gallaher (Dublin) Ltd, John Player & Sons, Ampersand, Hunters & Frankau Ltd and P J Carroll & Co. Together, they accounted for a 94% share of volume sales. Gallaher continued to be the leading company. However, its share continued to fall, dropping from 48% in 2013 to less than 47% in 2014.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, cigars is predicted to see volume sales fall at a CAGR of 2% to 2019, whilst cigarillos will see volume sales fall at a CAGR of 3% to 2019. Cigars excluding cigarillos is set to record a negative volume CAGR of 2%, with standard cigars registering the sharpest fall at a CAGR of 3%. Small cigars and large cigars are predicted to see negative volume CAGRs of 2% and 3%.
