Market Report, "Cat Food in the Netherlands", published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Oct 06 2015

Cat food recorded positive volume and value growth in 2014, across all categories. Other than dogs, cats are the most popular pets in the Netherlands. Due to the humanisation trend, and the wide availability of information and advice on pet care, Dutch cat owners are concerned about the welfare of their feline companions, and overly interested in buying the best products.

Competitive Landscape

Nestlé Purina Petcare Nederland BV maintained its leading position in cat food in the Netherlands. Following closely in second position was Mars Nederland BV, another major multinational company active in pet care. Despite these companies maintaining the leading positions, their value declined during the review period, losing value shares to local manufacturers and private label products, which are increasingly being offered in wide assortments. Nevertheless, the companies continued to invest in promotional activities in the Netherlands. Nestlé Purina Petcare’s luxurious Gourmet product line is served in single serving portions, making it convenient for cat owners to serve the food once without the need to store any leftovers. Mars Petcare promoted its Whiskas brand by offering cat owners with a cat younger than 1-year-old with a pack of Whiskas for free. Other than getting Whiskas cat food, the cat owners can also access videos, information and advice on how best to take care of their kitten. Mars Petcare’s Nutor brand of all-natural food also performed well in 2014.

Industry Prospects

Cat food is expected to continue registering positive growth over the forecast period. Growth rates are expected to be faster over the forecast period as compared to the review period. Manufacturers are projected to increase their promotional activities and this increased competition will put pressure on unit prices of cat food. Furthermore, private label products which are already gaining value in cat food are predicted to continue to grow due to manufacturers offering more premium products. This will further pressurise unit prices. However, manufacturers offering premium products are expected to innovate and provide products with added functionality, pushing unit prices up. These few contradictory effects will result in price stabilisation.
