Contact lenses recorded strong and stable growth after the economic recession in 2008-2009, when Russians started to switch from spectacles to lenses due to their higher convenience, practicality and fashion-driven popularity; however, the start of the new economic crisis was characterised by a significant decrease in consumers’ purchasing powers. This slowed down growth of contact lenses significantly in 2015, as Russians with bad eyesight who used to have both spectacles and lenses as a reserve started switching from lenses to spectacles in order to save money and make fewer purchases. Those who continue using contact lenses are becoming more careful when making purchases and are searching for lower prices and higher discounts. Hence, sales of contact lenses are shifting to online stores as the prices offered by this channel are lower than those in optical goods stores.
