Market Report, "Full-Service Restaurants in South Korea", published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Oct 07 2015

Sales per transaction in full-service restaurants are low in South Korea compared to what they are in other developed countries. The reason is mainly due to the preponderance of Asian full-service restaurants, many of which are small-sized outlets selling very simple meals such as pork cutlets, ddukbokki, gimbap, etc at less than high prices. In addition, with growing home delivery sales and services in Asian full-service restaurants, the companies have developed compact meals in the form of dosirak. Such development is countering the business model of street stall/kiosks, thus negatively affecting street stall/kiosk value sales.

Competitive Landscape

Bon Juk leads full-service restaurants in outlets terms with almost double the number of that of second leading brand Addal. Bon Juk serves Korean Porridge in small-sized outlets and also provides delivery services. The brand has a baby food menu which is very popular for both dining in and takeaway. Consumers often freeze takeaway baby food and reheat it when they need it.

Industry Prospects

Full-service restaurants will continue to be important places for socialising and for entertainment. More consumers will visit full-service restaurants for business meetings and the gathering of friends. To maximise its benefits the location as well as surrounding atmosphere is important. Some chained full-service restaurants only allow new outlets in downtown areas. Conversely, some companies are opening outlets at places that are difficult to reach without a car. Through this, the latter companies aim to create a more private and quiet atmosphere.
