Spectacles recorded healthy growth in all categories in both value and volume terms in 2015. The demand was backed up by an increasing population with eye-related problems, especially myopia and hyperopia. Ageing Thai people tend to deal more with long-sighted vision, whereas more Thai children and teenagers tend to have short-sighted issues. Moreover, many people wear sunglasses for fashionable purposes thanks to greater exposure to international fashion trends. As a result, they often have more than one pair of spectacles in their collection. As with contact lenses, fashion trends also influence spectacles. As a result, consumer behaviour in choosing spectacles is becoming more sophisticated.

Competitive Landscape

The licence as the authorised distributor for DKSH (Thailand) Co Ltd of Ray-Ban, Prada, Bvlgari expired and the brands are now marketed and distributed by Luxottica Wholesale (Thailand) Ltd, an affiliate of Luxottica Group SpA. Thai Hoya Lens Co Ltd and Rodenstock (Thailand) Co Ltd ranked second and third with value shares of 9% and 6% respectively thanks to their well-known brands of spectacle lenses. Thai Optical Group PCL held a share of 5% as the biggest chained optical shops with many branches nationwide.

Industry Prospects

Spectacles is expected to reach sales of Bt12 billion in 2020 with a value CAGR of 5% at constant 2015 prices in the forecast period. A higher incidence of myopia and hyperopia is expected among Thais, caused by changing lifestyles and increased digitisation, with people having more eye-focusing activities for study, work and relaxation. More time will be spent looking at the digital screens of computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Moreover, consumers will increasingly be interested in the significance of spectacles in terms of both fashion and optical health-related features. This will therefore back up the positive performance of spectacles.
