Sportswear recorded strong current value growth of 5% in 2014 to reach Won6.6 trillion. The category performed better than overall apparel and footwear with new entrants competing. Outdoor sportswear in particular was popular for many years since The North Face’s high value sales growth of 28% in 2011. However, the market seems to reach maturity, with the growth rate slowing down over the review period.

Competitive Landscape

adidas Korea Ltd led sportswear with 17% value share, followed by Nike Sports Korea Co Ltd which ranked second position with 12% value share. adidas met with continuous success in sportswear because it has a variety of products under the powerful brands of adidas and Reebok. In addition, the company segmented target consumer groups and product lines differently and approached them with different marketing activities. In 2014, adidas set a strategy that children form the most important consumer group over the forecast period and launched "adidas Kids" outlets exclusively for children. It also hires different models with various images to promote its products targeting different consumer groups. For example, adidas promoted sports star Sung-hoon Choo to advertise the adidas brand to attract male consumers and hired top model Yun-joo Chang to attract the younger female group. To attract teenagers, it actively hires k-pop stars and holds many fan meeting and showcases. Product wise, as outdoors is the big trend in South Korea, adidas is to exclusively launch an outdoor line. Previously, adidas provided outdoor apparel and footwear through its outlets; however, from 2015 they will be distributed through adidas outdoor outlets exclusively. These aggressive marketing activities by the company allow it to show strong growth in sportswear.
