Brazilian electronics retailers reported a steep drop off in spending in the first half of 2015, with the PC and AV segments declining sharply even in local currency terms. As a result w e made a significant downgrade to the growth outlook for Brazil's consumer electronics market in the Q 4 15 update and now expect a contraction of almost 33% in US dollar terms. The outlook is weak because of recession, real depreciation against the US dollar and device trends such as the fact TV set and PC upgrade demand was brought forward to 2014.

The market will continue to exhibit weak performance in 2016 but we expect recovery from 2017 enabling vendors to tap into significant opportunities such as 4G smartphones as operators expand the reach of networks and promote services, low-cost Android tablets, notebooks, Wi-Fi-enabled and HD TV sets. Over our forecast to 2019 income growth and declining device prices will deepen the consumer electronics market, which is the key driver of growth from 2016 as the real stabilises.

Computer hardware sales: USD19.5bn in 2014 to USD11.9bn in 2015, -39% in US dollar terms.
