The illegal trade of cigarettes saw an increasing trend in Romania in 2014. This was the first year since 2010 in which the illicit trade witnessed growth. The advance in illicit trade is explained by large volumes of cigarettes coming from Ukraine, in particular. Moreover, the share of counterfeit cigarettes is high in Romania, representing 16% of the total black market. 87% of counterfeit brands come from Ukraine. The most copied brand is Viceroy.
