The Italian economy recovered somewhat in 2015 as GDP increased by 1%. However, the high rate of unemployment, which stood at 12.4% in April 2015, meant that most Italians have not completely abandoned their cautious attitude towards spending developed during the economic crisis. The improved but not yet buoyant economic climate in the country continued to shape the performance of spectacles in 2015, with value sales increasing by 1% in current terms, the highest rate of the review period during the category.

Competitive Landscape

Carl Zeiss Vision, Luxottica and Essilor remained the three top players within the fragmented category of spectacles in 2014. The two leading players in the category are already well established in the country. Many retailers remain highly loyal to the spectacle frames and sunglasses supplied by Luxottica and lenses supplied by Carl Zeiss due to their high quality and strong brand image. Luxottica provides the leading brand in the category, Ray-Ban while Zeiss is the top brand in spectacle lenses, while Carl Zeiss’ other brand Sol is also a major name in the category.

Industry Prospects

Improving economic indicators and, in particular, the anticipated decline in Italy’s unemployment rate are set to be the main factors behind the positive performance expected in spectacles over the forecast period. As such, the category is expected to increase in value at a CAGR of 2% at constant 2015 prices. According to a recent survey conducted by the trade association FederOttica during the economic crisis, the percentage of Italians who needed their spectacles changed but did not do so for economic reasons was significant, at around 20%. This situation is expected to change over the forecast period, due to the better economic conditions and the actions of associations that are increasingly making Italians more aware of the importance of maintaining constant awareness of the state of their own eye health.
