The key trend in analgesics in 2015 was the continuing popularity of faster relief formulations. GlaxoSmithKline New Zealand claimed that its Panadol Rapid brand, which was introduced in the review period, could be absorbed twice as fast as original Panadol and it continued to advertise the brand widely in 2014-2015. It was available in capsules, soluble tablets and a handipack (for on-the-go pain relief). In addition, the company introduced Panadol Extra with Optizorb in 2013. This patented formulation gives faster relief as the analgesic starts to break down in seven minutes, and is absorbed 25% faster than Panadol original. Reckitt Benckiser New Zealand introduced another faster relief analgesic, Nurofen Zavance, which is an ibuprofen-based medicine. The company also claims that it can be absorbed faster than original Nurofen.

Reckitt Benckiser New Zealand Ltd leads analgesics with a value share of 35% in 2015, a decrease of one percentage point from 2014. Nurofen continues to be the flagship brand for the company in analgesics with a value share of 24% and is the second-highest brand in analgesics. Other strong brands include Disprin (acetaminophen), Nuromol (combination analgesic), and Bonjela (topical analgesic/anaesthetic). In particular, the company concentrates on marketing the faster relief formulation of Nurofen Zavance liquid filled capsules (introduced in 2009) and the Nuromol combination analgesic launched in 2011.

Industry Prospects

Faster and prolonged relief is likely to continue to be the key trend over the forecast period, with effective delivery formats such as liquid caplets. As the population ages, so too will the appeal for targeted, specific analgesics for conditions more prevalent in older people such as the Panadol Osteo product. Analgesics that provide pain relief for joints, arthritis and backache are expected to grow, along with low dose aspirin for heart health.
