Sales of eye care are usually dynamic but were slightly dampened by two negative factors in 2015. Firstly, the category was indirectly negatively impacted by the continuing success of eye care supplements, such as Preservision 3 from Bausch & Lomb and Nutrof Omega by Théa Pharma. Then, correlated with climatic conditions, allergy eye care often experienced irregular sales with frequent peaks and troughs. The first months of 2015 so were cold in comparison with the winter of 2014 that allergy eye care declined by 7% in value in spite of the rather dry end of spring 2015, which is favourable for conjunctivitis due to the distribution of pollen.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape in eye care was rather concentrated in terms of players, yet slightly more fragmented in terms of brands in 2015. It was almost exclusively in the hands of international brands/manufacturers. Five companies with shares over 5%, Théa Pharma, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, Ursapharm Benelux, Alcon-Couvreur and Bausch & Lomb, led the category in 2015. Following its introduction prior to the review period, Théa Pharma’s Hyabak became the brand leader in 2006, and forged ahead during the bulk of the review period. Nonetheless, it progressed much less in 2015 than other brands such as Théa Pharma’s Thealoz in 2015.

Industry Prospects

Some manufacturers are rather confident in the potential of eye care, at least in value terms. Sales should continue to progress thanks to the growing number of contact lens wearers, the ageing of the population, and an increase in the number of people who have laser corrective surgery. The difficulty in getting an appointment with an ophthalmologist will also benefit sales. Indeed, the lengthening of waiting times before a consultation should encourage more consumers to purchase OTC eye care directly after taking advice from a chemist/pharmacist.
