Sales of NRT smoking cessation aids took a strong backseat in 2015 due to the conjunction of two negative factors. Firstly, some players suspect the emerging niche category of e-cigarettes cannibalised sales of NRT smoking cessation aids. Then, GlaxoSmithKline, one of the key players, faced a sudden stock storage due to problems in the Niquitin plant in South Carolina. Given the most affected products were NiQuitin Patch and Niquitin Lozenge, this was an opportunity for NRT gum and NRT inhalators, sales of which recorded double-digit value growth in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

The last couple of years of the review period witnessed a drastic change in the competitive landscape of NRT smoking cessation aids. After regaining in 2014 the leading position it lost in 2013, Janssen-Cilag (GBO: Johnson & Johnson) took off to reach an outstanding share of 69% in 2015. First, Nicorette took advantage of the strong recovery of NRT gum at the expense of NRT patches in 2014. Whilst consumers had shifted towards more convenient smoking cessation aids up until 2011, Nicorette concentrated on "modular" formats, such as Nicorette Gum and Nicorette Microtab Lemon. In 2014, Nicorette’s strategy paid off as it attracted undecided and anxious smokers by helping them to reduce their consumption, this being a first step to increasing their self-confidence before kicking the habit for good. Then, the collapsing of sale of NRT patches and lozenges due to the shortage of products was a further opportunity for Janssen-Cilag in 2015.

Industry Prospects

The outlook for NRT smoking cessation aids is expected to rely on the performance of e-cigarettes over the forecast period. This concept never really took off in Belgium due to the restricted distribution of these products to chemists/pharmacies and tight controls by local authorities. In early 2015, most e-cigarette brands were still not authorised for sale, with the majority coming from neighbouring countries. This should change in 2016, however, when Belgian smoking legislation will have to be aligned with European recommendations. This means that e-cigarettes should be available in outlets other than chemists/pharmacies and thus could once again jeopardise sales of NRT smoking cessation aids.
