According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Ireland is on target to become the most obese nation in Europe by 2030. Obesity amongst women in particular is predicted to increase by 23% to 57% of the female population according to estimates published in May 2015. The male population does not fare much better, with 48% of men expected to be classed as obese, a rise of 26% from current figures, whilst the figure for those classed as either overweight or obese is set to rise to 89%, up from 74%. These figures have added further impetus to the government’s efforts to address the obesity crisis in the present with a view not only to improve the general health of the population, but also limiting potential future pressures on national resources such as health and social welfare services.

Competitive Landscape

Unilever Ireland Ltd remained the category’s biggest player in 2015, with a 44% value share, due to the continued popularity of its Slim Fast brand. Slim Fast has been a household name in Ireland for many years and is often considered a benchmark within meal replacements. It remains available through a wide range of retail channels and in an even wider range of formats, from RTD shake to bars and milkshake powder. Other players exist, but not to any degree likely to threaten Slim Fast’s dominant status within meal replacements and, accordingly, the status of Unilever Ireland Ltd as the category’s number one player.

Industry Prospects

Weight management in Ireland is not expected to match the prolific growth in obesity levels predicted by the WHO for Ireland. People are becoming increasingly conscious of their overall fitness levels from the perspective of long-term health and maintenance. In this regard their attention is focused primarily on having a healthier diet and taking increased amounts of exercise. Weight loss clubs are very common in Ireland and weight loss vacations lasting from a weekend to an entire week have become available. Organisations such as Weight Watchers are very popular and offer a social outlet as well as a means of lifestyle support.
