New Study: Analgesics in Kenya

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Dec 14 2015

Analgesics remained the biggest consumer health category in Kenya in 2015, with growth in the category driven by population growth and urbanisation. Products such as acetaminophen are widely available and affordable for the majority of Kenyan consumers, being the lowest priced analgesics in the country. Additionally, throughout the year there was heightened advertising activity among the leading analgesics brands, Panadol and Hedex. As a result, analgesics recorded positive value growth in 2015, although at a slower rate than in 2014, to reach KES14.9 billion by the end of the year.

Competitive Landscape

GlaxoSmithKline continued to lead analgesics in 2015 with a value share of 18%. In distant second position was Harley’s with a 5% value share. Reckitt Benckiser East Africa and Adcock Ingram East Africa were in third fourth positions respectively in 2015, each with a value share of 4%, while Dawa Pharmaceuticals was in fifth position with a value share of 3%.

Industry Prospects

The increase expected in the size of Kenya’s urban population over the forecast period is set to spur growth in analgesics. Furthermore, changing consumer lifestyles, with growing stress levels for workers and increasingly busy lifestyles are also set to see consumers purchasing more analgesics over the counter to treat for pains and discomfort as opposed to seeking the consultation of doctors. Thus, analgesics is expected to increase in value at a CAGR of 2% at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period.
