Digestive Remedies in the Netherlands - New Study Released

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Dec 14 2015

Value growth remained strong and healthy in digestive remedies in 2015. The 5% current value growth recorded in the category in 2015 was in line with the 5% current value CAGR recorded in the category over the entire review period. While most Dutch consumers still prefer prescription drugs over OTC drugs when faced with digestive problems, the innate price-consciousness of many Dutch consumers has driven them towards OTC. Company activity which aims to educate consumers about digestive remedies through television and magazine advertising has fuelled sales even further in recent years.

Competitive Landscape

Omega Pharma Nederland BV remained the leading player in digestive remedies in value terms in 2015. The company’s strong position is on two brands: Zantac and Nourilax. Zantac is the only H2-blocker available over the counter in the Netherlands and the brand was sold to Omega Pharma Nederland BV by GlaxoSmithKline BV in 2012. The shares of Zantac Bruistabletten declined over the review period and, as a result, Omega Pharma decided to re-launch the product in 2015 as Zantac Snel. Zantac Snel is basically the same product as Zantac Bruistabletten except that it is in chewable tablet format, which is in line with the trend towards more convenient products in digestive remedies. Due to the recent re-launch of Zantac Snel, Omega Pharma’s value shares recorded positive growth once again in 2015 after consistent declines were recorded over much of the review period.

Industry Prospects

It is expected that digestive remedies will post strong value growth over the forecast period, although value growth is most likely to slow down towards the end of the forecast period. Value growth in digestive remedies is set to be driven by numerous factors. First, the Dutch population is set to age even further, with the average age of Dutch consumers set to increase. Digestive problems are more common among the elderly, which is set to fuel sales of digestive remedies over the forecast period. Second, consumers who travel abroad are also set to fuel sales as they tend to take digestive remedies with them in case of digestive problems when they reach their destinations .
