New Market Research Report: Cough, Cold and Allergy (Hay Fever) Remedies in Ireland

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Dec 16 2015

The continuing decline in paediatric cough/cold products remains the most prominent feature of this category in Ireland in 2015. The category was greatly impacted initially in 2011 when Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) decreed that cough and cold medicines should not be sold on an OTC basis for consumption by children under the age of six. It was considered that at such a young age the risk/reward balance of the medicinal product appeared marginal. The resultant decline has reached an average of 5% per annum in current value terms since that particular year. An additional recommendation from the HPRA in 2013 that medicines containing codeine should not be administered to children under the age of twelve, and should only be administered to 12-18 year olds with caution, has since impacted the category to an even greater degree. In both cases, such medicines cannot be dispensed without first receiving advice from a licensed pharmacist.

Competitive Landscape

Reckitt Benckiser Ireland Ltd maintained its position as the leading player within the category in 2015 with a 26% value share. This position is reinforced by the prevalence of its Lemsip and Strepsils brands, which are ranked second and third within the individual brand rankings respectively, with both having a 10% value share. New flavour variations and high-profile multi-media advertising continues to drive the performances of both brands.

Industry Prospects

Cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies is expected to increase in value at a CAGR of 1% in constant 2015 terms over the forecast period. Further significant growth will likely be limited by the overall maturity of the category. Future restrictions to growth within the category stem from the seasonal nature of many of its products. Low cost and generic products should see a modest increase in their value shares as customers become more familiar with their efficacy, but this growth will likely be constrained by the relatively stable unit prices of the trusted brands.
