Market Report, "Cameroon Agribusiness Report Q1 2016", published

Cocoa remains Cameroon's most important cash crop. With higher prices encouraging farmers to invest in inputs, we are forecasting production to reach 225,000 tonnes in 2014/15 and consumption to close the year at 1 3 , 9 00 tonnes. Over the remainder of our forecast period to 2018/19 we believe improved production techniques will give cocoa farmers new opportunities to sell greater quantities of beans on international markets. More broadly , we see growth in the production and consumption of all key soft commodities in Cameroon, with the exception of the coffee market. With lower prices worldwide on the back of increasing global supply surpluses, we believe coffee growers will be pushed towards more reliably profitable food crops.

Latest Updates

Corn production growth 2013/14 to 2018/19: 21.3% to 2.0mn tonnes. Corn is Cameroon's most significant grain crop and a major staple in the country. Although dry weather may have hampered recent harvests, we continue to predict strong production growth over our five-year forecast period, on the back of increased investment, relatively high prices and strong domestic demand.
Cocoa consumption growth 2013/14 to 2018/19: 203.0% to 33,800 tonnes. We expect household demand for cocoa to increase dramatically yet consistently over our forecast period, fuelled by rising disposable incomes and greater exposure to value-added processed products.
2015 real GDP growth: 5.4% (revised up from 3.8% in our last quarterly update).
