During 2015, sales of dermatologicals continued to benefit from the favourable climatic conditions. The absence of a strong winter and the warm weather which prevailed in spring, June and July resulted in an above-average number of small ailments requiring the use of dermatologicals. In particular, antipruritics, topical germicidals/antiseptics and topical antifungals benefited from the warm and sunny weather conditions. Antipruritics is a category which includes products that are used to treat insect bites, which are more common during favourable weather conditions. Topical germicidals/antiseptics are more popular during good weather conditions because consumers are engaged in outdoor activities more, which can lead to more accidents which require disinfection. Sales of topical antifungals increased as more consumers went swimming due to the favourable weather conditions, while athlete’s foot is becoming a very common skin infection among swimmers.

Competitive Landscape

Remark Pharma BV remained the leading player in dermatologicals in 2015 with a value share of 15%. Remark Pharma became the largest player in dermatologicals in 2012, when it took the leading position in the category from Bayer Consumer Care BV. Remark Pharma BV is present in the largest dermatologicals categories with flagship brands such as Dr Swaab in nappy (diaper) rash treatments, antipruritics and topical germicidals/antiseptics, Resdan in medicated shampoos and Nestosyl in antipruritics. Remark Pharma managed to achieve positive growth in its value share over the review period, although growth stagnated in 2015. Although all of Remark Pharma’s brands achieved positive value growth, in 2015 the seemingly relentless growth of private label caused its value shares to stagnate.

Industry Prospects

Dermatologicals is expected to increase in value at a CAGR of 2% at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period, a higher rate of growth than the 1% value CAGR recorded in the category at constant 2015 prices over the review period. Most dermatologicals categories are expected to perform better over the forecast period, with the exception of hair loss treatments, antiparasitics/lice (head and body) treatments, paediatric dermatologicals and cold sore treatments. Hair loss treatments and cold sore treatments are each expected to record a slowdown in growth due to maturity in the category and a lack of innovation to boost value sales. Antiparasitics/lice (head and body) treatments and paediatric dermatologicals will most likely underperform over the forecast period because of the declining size of the target audience for these products, children.
