Consumer attention to their body shape and appearance, especially for women, continued to be very important in 2015. Weight management posted slightly slower current value growth of 11% in 2015 compared with the previous year, reaching RUB14.9 billion. Continued double-digit growth was related to changes in legislation concerning prescription weight management drugs. A precept from the Ministry of Health called "On approving the list of drugs for medical use that are subject for quantitative accounting" became operative on 16 August 2014. Among other things, this precept toughened the turnover of prescription medicines intended for reducing the appetite. The prescriptions for such drugs are now issued on a special form, which has become more difficult to obtain. In addition, more-rigorous accounting was introduced at the points of sale of such drugs. This led to Russians who wished to lose weight increasingly focusing on self-medication. Advertising in the mass media and user feedback on forums and social networks had a greater impact on consumer choices.

Competitive Landscape

Weight management was led by Herbalife International RS in 2015 with a value share of 15%. The company was one of the first to position its products within meal replacement slimming, which is becoming very popular in Russia. Polyaris was the second largest player in 2015 due to its popular line of brands, Reduksin.

Industry Prospects

Weight management is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 4% at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period, reaching RUB18.1 billion in 2020. Expected growth is slower than the rise at a CAGR of 10% registered over the review period, which is a result of the increasingly strong economising trend due to the continuing economic slowdown in Russia over the forecast period. Consumers are likely to opt for traditional diets in order to lose weight. Nevertheless, sales are predicted to be driven by a high number of new launches and widening distribution. Growing health awareness and increasing overweight and obesity rates will thus shape the performance of weight management over the forecast period.
