New Study: Dermatologicals in Slovakia

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Dec 16 2015

Dermatologicals saw only sluggish sales growth at the end of the review period. Sales growth is being constrained by a number of factors, including low consumer awareness of dermatological problems and their treatment. Many consumers simply endure mild symptoms, while taboos surrounding issues such as vaginal infections and haemorrhoids also result in a reluctance to ask for some products in chemists/pharmacies. Many consumers prefer to seek a doctor's advice for serious problems and indeed the privacy of a doctor's surgery is often preferred when consumers are discussing potentially embarrassing complaints. Beauty and personal care is also posing strong competition in some areas, with anti-dandruff shampoo and baby skin care for example constraining sales growth in medicated shampoos and paediatric dermatologicals.

Competitive Landscape

The leading company in dermatologicals is Novartis, but this company held a value share of less than 14% in 2015. Dermatologicals is strongly fragmented, with many players having a share in only one or two product areas. Novartis meanwhile has a presence in topical antifungals, haemorrhoid treatments and topical allergy remedies/antihistamines but the latter product area accounts for the vast majority of its sales in dermatologicals. The company's Fenistil Gel brand indeed dominates this product area, accounting for 88% value share. The brand benefits from being well-known among Slovak consumers thanks to TV advertising earlier in the review period.

Industry Prospects

Dermatologicals is expected to continue to suffer from a lack of marketing support in the forecast period. Strong marketing would be required to overcome the taboos associated with many areas, such as vaginal antifungals and haemorrhoid treatments. In addition, consumer awareness of many dermatological issues remains low. With little indication that marketing investment will increase in the forecast period, most consumers will thus remain likely to simply endure minor dermatological problems or to seek doctors' advice and Rx remedies for serious conditions.
