However, the four first months of 2015 were poor and the decline of weight management products so strong that it was difficult for the category to record appreciable growth in 2015. In addition, marketers were surprised by the disappointing results of drainers. Finally, manufacturers also decided to focus their media advertising support in spring and did not communicate before April-May, which contributed to the weak performance of weight management during the first months of the year.

Competitive Landscape

Holding a 31% value share in 2015, Novartis Consumer Health continued to lead the way in weight management due to its outright leadership in meal replacement slimming with a 76% value share in 2015. Already the leader in the latter category at the beginning of the review period, Novartis Consumer Health benefited from the exit of Gayelord Hauser from meal replacement slimming at the end of 2012. Although Gayelord Hauser was viewed as offering one of the widest product portfolios, it previously focused on bars and snacks, with these offering more consistent sales. However, before 2011, it also diversified into weight loss supplements and thus dedicated fewer resources to its expansion in meal replacement slimming, which affected its share in this category.
