New Report Available: Baked Goods in Serbia

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.

Unpackaged/artisanal products will continue to dominate the three main baked goods categories of bread, pastries and cakes in Serbia in 2014. The main reason for this is that unpackaged/artisanal products are generally cheaper than packaged/industrial alternatives. Nonetheless, packaged/industrial products have been steadily gaining popularity in all three categories (especially bread) over the last 10-15 years. This is partly because increasingly busy lifestyles in Serbia have strengthened consumer appreciation for the convenience of packaged/industrial baked goods, which have longer shelf lives than unpackaged/artisanal products. At the same time, economic development and the expansion of modern grocery retailers formats have made packaged/industrial baked goods more affordable and accessible to many Serbians. All of this should help to ensure that packaged/industrial products post faster growth in retail volume sales than their unpackaged/artisanal counterparts in bread, pastries and cakes in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Beogradska Pekarska Industrija remained the leading player in baked goods in 2013 with an overall value share of 6%. An extensive distribution network, a loyal consumer base and consistently strong marketing support for its brands were the main factors behind its leadership. Hleb ad was the second leading company overall with a value share of 4%, followed by PDM doo with a 3% share. Other prominent competitors in baked goods included Pekarska Industrija Pancevo ad, Fidelinka ad and Aleksandrija doo.

Industry Prospects

The growing desire for convenience among Serbian consumers will continue to fuel the shift from unpackaged/artisanal bread to packaged/industrial varieties over the forecast period. At the same time, rising health awareness will lead more Serbians to reduce their consumption of bread in general and switch to bread substitutes products. Accordingly, both the packaged/industrial bread and bread substitutes categories are expected to witness more new product launches towards 2019 as manufacturers move to capitalise on these trends.
