Home video benefited strongly from high incomes and a strong interest in technological innovation in the United Arab Emirates at the end of the review period. Many consumers are thus keen to upgrade TVs in line with the most recent innovations, with LED TVs and OLED TVs thus seeing strong growth. Internet (smart) TVs are also encouraging many low- to mid-income consumers to upgrade, while 3D-enabled TVs are also fuelling growth.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung is the leading player in home video and accounted for an impressive 38% retail volume share in 2015, up almost half a percentage point over the previous year. The company benefits from offering a wide range in terms of price, product area and functionality and also offers attractive prices. The company also continues to invest heavily in innovation, with 2015 notably seeing the launch of its SUHD TV range. This range offers UHD TVs, with these products seeing growing demand among an affluent consumer base that is attracted by technological innovation. These curved 4K models deliver four times as much detail as 1080p Full HD with eight million rather than two million pixels, thus offering greater detail and texture. The range differentiates itself from other UHD models by using nano-pixel technology, claiming 64 times more colour expression than standard UHD TVs and a more eco- and eye-friendly viewing experience.

Industry Prospects

The start of the forecast period is expected to see a technology war within televisions, with leading companies competing via differing platforms. 4K TVs and UHD will be important to all serious contenders but LG is expected to continue to plough ahead thanks to its boundary-breaking OLED TVs while Samsung is expected to benefit from promoting its SUHD technology. Screen size will also continue to be an important factor in this war, with aspirational consumers generally attracted by a large but slim screen. "Wallpaper" TVs could notably prove a strong trend in the forecast period. May 2015 saw LG unveil a prototype 55" OLED TV that is just 1mm wide and sticks to the wall using magnets. If such products are launched at the start of the forecast period, they would be likely to prove enticing to consumers in the United Arab Emirates.
