As in the case of home audio and cinema, piracy has helped DVD players to avoid total extinction over the review period. A stronger price drop compared to BD players is helping DVD players’ permanence in the market. BD players is also benefiting from piracy and to a lesser extent from their capabilities to turn a standard TV into a smart TV. The migration to smart TVs has been faster and practically prevented the adoption of BD or gaming consoles to convert standard TVs into smart TVs. Decreasing prices of smart TVs, convenience and manufacturers promoting the benefits of separate smart TVs rather than giving the option to consumers to use BD players to have a smart TV at a fraction of the cost are some of the factors that hampered the performance of BD players.

Competitive Landscape

LG Electronics Colombia Ltda leads the sales of home video in Colombia. With 33% volume share expected in 2015, the company has a very strong position through a wide distribution network including hypermarkets, electronics and appliance independent retailers and the internet. Along with the distribution network, LG is positioned in consumers’ minds as a high-quality brand with a wide offer of home video products. The company is quite relevant in televisions as it has been one of the pioneers bringing the latest developments to Colombia including 3D, HD and smart TVs.

Industry Prospects

BD players’ growth over the forecast period will suffer due to the gradual but fast adoption of streaming services such as Netflix and others provided by TV channels such as Caracol Play and cable TV providers such as Claro TV. Despite that, dropping prices will still make them attractive as they can extend the replacement time for smart TV adoption and piracy will continue to offer the most recent movies, something that is not happening in streaming services. DVD players’ volume will dramatically fall to the extent that BD players’ prices drop, reducing the price gap that makes DVDs more attractive.
