The growth of in-dash media players in Norway is being driven by digital radio. Trade sources state that actual retail volumes of car radios grew from 112,000 units in 2014 to 150,000 units in 2015, a rise of 34%. Government bodies in Norway have set a 50% requirement share for digital radio in 2015. This means that at least half of daily radio listeners should be listening to the digital platform by the end of 2015. FM radio will be ended in 2017, but with a contingency for car radios in that there must be in place an affordable and satisfying solution. If these requirements are not met, the end of FM radio will be deferred until 2019. This is supporting volume sales of car radios and subsequently in-dash media players. Indeed, the volume sales of car radios are expected to grow strongly again in 2016, increasing to a total of 200,000 units, equating to growth of 33% on 2015.

TomTom Sales BV Norway Branch continued to lead in-car navigation in 2015 with a retail volume share of 63%. Garmin Norge AS ranked second with a share of 32%, while "others" accounted for the remaining share. TomTom’s leadership can be attributed to its wide product range and stronger distribution than other brands. For instance, of the 29 in-car navigation models listed for sale by the leading electronics and appliance specialist retailer Elkjøp in June 2015, 22 of these were TomTom models. This is also apparent from a review of the online catalogue of the retailer Expert. 25 of the 39 listed in-car navigation models by Expert in June 2015 were TomTom products. This factor contributed to TomTom recording the strongest volume share gain of one percentage point in 2015.

Industry Prospects

The aforementioned change to digital radio from FM will ensure the strong volume sales growth of car radios in 2016. The expected volume sales performance of DAB radio is the only bright spot in an otherwise bleak outlook for the forecast period prospects of in-car entertainment in Norway.
