Demand for wearable electronics began to gain significant momentum in 2015 thanks to two main factors. Diverse advertising campaigns by relevant players that is effective in raising consumer awareness/interest in such devices. In addition, as new players enter the category, the proliferation of lower-priced wearable electronics is rendering products more affordable. Also in terms affordability, various manufacturers offered appealing cash reimbursement plans, which helped to boost demand.

Competitive Landscape

With a 31% volume share, Sony France SA led wearable electronics in 2015, with its strongest share (39%) recorded in autonomous wearable electronics. The company leverages its first-mover advantage and strong brand recognition in this category. Furthermore, Sony offered attractive cash reimbursement offers during 2015; for instance, in May-June, it offered a €150 cash refund with the double purchase of its Sony Xperia X3 smartphone and its SmartWatch 3. It should be noted, however, that Sony lost four percentage points in terms of volume share in autonomous wearable electronics to Samsung and Apple. The latter companies gained share mainly as a result of new product launches, promotional offers and a communication campaign.
