In September 2014, Sweden’s Medical Products Agency (MPA) announced its decision to ban sales of acetaminophen tablets and capsules in all retail outlets other than chemists/pharmacies. The background to this decision is that there had been a notable increase in poisoning cases related to acetaminophen observed in Sweden in previous years, which encouraged the Medical Products Agency to implement a ban on the general sale of acetaminophen tablets and capsules, with effect from 1 November 2015. Nevertheless, liquids, effervescent tablets and suppositories containing acetaminophen are not affected by the ban. The Medical Products Agency claims that there is a direct correlation between the liberalised rules on sales of acetaminophen through grocery retailers and other non-pharmacy retailers which came into effect in 2009 and the contemporaneous increase registered in cases of acetaminophen poisoning. According to the Agency, reports to the country’s Poison Information Centre concerning acetaminophen poisoning saw steep increases in the years preceding and following the liberalisation of sales of the drug, with annual reported cases of acetaminophen poisoning up from 2,500 in 2006 to 4,400 in 2013. The decision to restrict retail sales of acetaminophen has been appealed to the Swedish Administrative Court (Förvaltningsrätten), which will decide on the matter during autumn 2015.

Competitive Landscape

GlaxoSmithKline led analgesics in 2015, accounting for 29% of value sales in the category. The multinational company’s strong position is mainly the result of the company’s Alvedon and Panadol brands. Alvedon has a long history in Sweden and remains the leading analgesics brand in the country, constantly supported by advertising campaigns both on national television and in the print media. The selection of products offered under the Alvedon brand is especially wide and includes various different delivery formats, ranging across tablets, meltlets, suppositories and effervescent products as well as paediatric oral suspensions.
