The consecutive withdrawal of batches of eye care products in 2014, created a negative stigma around the category in 2015. Both large players in eye care, Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithKline, withdrew batches due to non-compliance with practices of good production. This further worsened the already decreasing sales of eye care over the review period due to consumers’ lack of caution over their eye health. As use of eye care tends to be incidence-based, some consumers do not even demand eye care treatments and opt for other practices instead, such as taking supplements and vitamins, proper rest and hydrating.

Competitive Landscape

With a 49% value share in 2015, Johnson & Johnson led eye care with its Visine brand. Although promotional activities were quiet for this company, loyal consumers ensured slow but stable growth in 2015. Ranked second in eye care was GlaxoSmithKline. Its brand, Eye Mo, is almost as popular as Visine with a value share of 39%.
