New Report Available: Home Audio and Cinema in Portugal

Two global trends affected the performance of home audio and cinema in 2015: the more rational consumers who emerged from the crisis, and also the increasing trend towards simplification, particularly affecting categories in which substitution is easy. The possibility of easy access to music and video through other options, such as televisions, smartphones, tablets and computers, started to make some of the single-function categories obsolete.

Competitive Landscape

Sony was the leading brand in home audio and cinema in 2015, with a 21% volume share. Despite seeing an actual volume sales decline in 2015, Sony managed to gain share, due to its strong reputation and brand association with this category. LG and Samsung were the two next most important brands. LG presented the largest volume decrease amongst the three most important players. LG does not see this category as having good prospects, and it is having difficulty increasing sales. It launched a new sound bar, the LAS550H model, with multi-bluetooth, with the possibility of connecting up to three devices at same time. This was offered at a very competitive price of €300, but was not enough to compensate for the meagre sales of other sound systems.

Industry Prospects

Simplicity and connectivity are key words in home audio and cinema. It is generally expected that volume sales will continue to decrease. The only two exceptions are digital media player docks and sound bars, because they fit well within the new context and use that consumers give to their devices. The former will be stimulated by sales of smartphones, and is expected to continue to grow, allowing for the simplification of devices at home, and most of all portability. Sound bars will follow the same trend, with the simplification of complex and space-consuming home theatres and hi-fi systems.
