Analgesics in Mexico - New Market Study Published

In December 2013, Casa Saba, the leading Mexican distributor of medicines, sold its distribution business to the North American companies Pharma Equity Global and World Global Equity. This was the first of many moves that Casa Saba made after declaring bankruptcy. As Casa Saba was previously the largest Mexican distributor of medicines, this sale negatively affected many Rx and OTC categories, and analgesics was no exception.

Competitive Landscape

Analgesics in Mexico is highly fragmented, with only three companies holding more than a 10% value share in 2015. The leading company in 2015 was Bayer de México, accounting for a 24% value share, closely followed by Bristol-Myers Squibb de México, which accounted for a 19% value share. The third company was Johnson & Johnson de México, which held a 10% value share. Bayer benefits from being in the country for decades, maintaining its position with the still-popular slogan "if it’s Bayer it’s good." Bayer owns the Flanax and Aspirina brands, which almost represent their categories, as their brand names mean almost any other naproxen (in the case of Flanax) or aspirin (in the case of aspirin). Bristol-Myers Squibb owns the leading acetaminophen brand for babies and children, Tempra, whilst Johnson & Johnson has a strong presence with Motrin (paediatric ibuprofen) and Tylenol (acetaminophen), which is preferred by some consumers thanks to the "no stomach irritating" benefit compared with other analgesics for adults.
