"Singapore Freight Transport Report Q1 2016" Published

We hold a positive view on Singapore's freight transport sector in 2016. Although the highly developed nature of the market means that growth will be steady rather than spectacular, an improving outlook in the global economy and ongoing investment in the freight transport network will ensure a continued expansion this year and beyond.

Trade growth in Singapore will remain positive in both real and nominal terms in 2016 and over our medium-term forecast period to 2019. Domestic demand does not paint the whole picture when it comes to Singapore's freight transport sector, however, and as a major global transhipment hub the country handles trade volumes from all over the world. As such, the freight transport sector can be seen as a barometer for the global economy.

According to our projections, road haulage volumes in Singapore will enjoy a return to growth in 2016, following five years of consecutive declines. This will nevertheless be sedate, due largely to the statistical base effects of a developed market.

Air freight tonnes through Singapore's Changi airport will see steady if unspectacular growth in 2016 and beyond. The airport is one of the largest air freight facilities in the world, and as such base effects are considerable, and sharp movements are rate. A negative outlook for the electronic manufacturing industry will weigh on volumes, but the pharmaceuticals industry, strong domestic demand and transhipment services will keep growth in positive territory.
