South Africa had crude iron ore reserves of around 1 billion tonnes (bnt) as of January 2015, accounting for 1% of the global total. Hematite and magnetite ore deposits are mostly found in the province of Northern Cape. The country produced 80.8 million tones (Mt) of iron ore in 2014 - up by 13% over the previous year due to an increase in production at the Sishen mine. The Northern Cape was the major iron ore producing province, producing an estimated 72-75mt, followed by the Limpopo (1.1mt) and Mpumalanga provinces (1.9mt).
