Market Report, "Eye Care in the US", published

Standard eye care growth accelerated in 2015, surpassing growth in allergy eye care for the first time in four years. Growth drivers include increased use of electronic devices and contact lenses, LASIK surgeries, and environmental factors. Exposure to screens on electronic devices can lead to dry eye as a result of reduced blinking and wider eyes. It may also have a detrimental impact on the composition of ocular secretions by reducing the concentration of the protein MUC5AC, which plays a role in the hydration of the eye. As consumers spend more time in front of screens for both work and leisure, the prevalence for dry eye increases, precipitating the need for standard eye care products. More than 30 million individuals use contact lenses in the US, which can cause irritation and dryness that requires treatment with standard eye care products. Research has suggested that up to 50% of soft contact lens wearers complain of dryness. Additionally, more than 700,000 US residents have LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgeries each year to correct vision deficiencies. After these surgeries patients are required to use standard eye care drops for a period of time to lubricate eyes as they heal. As many as 30% of LASIK patients report needing lubricating products permanently after the procedure. Finally, colder, drier environments common during US winters in many parts of the country exacerbate dry eye symptoms and promote greater use of standard eye care products.

Competitive Landscape

Whilst only three companies accounted for more than 60% of retail value sales in 2015, competition at the brand level in eye care is fierce. This is particularly true in allergy eye care, with each of the five major brands, as well as private label products, holding 12-19% of retail value sales.

Industry Prospects

Value sales of eye care products will continue to grow over the forecast period at a 2% CAGR at constant 2015 prices. Modern lifestyle trends and demographic developments, along with the increasing incidence of allergies, will continue to support demand.
