New Report Available: Grocery Retailers in Switzerland

In January 2015, the Swiss National Bank announced that it would remove the 1.20 floor on the CHF-euro exchange rate. This exchange rate floor was introduced in September 2011 when the franc was massively overvalued as a measure to save the Swiss economy from significant damage; however, by the start of 2015, the Swiss National Bank considered this measure to be no longer justifiable. As a result and due to the high valuation of the Swiss franc, Swiss consumers were therefore encouraged to buy goods in neighbouring Germany, France and Italy, where they are less expensive.

Competitive Landscape

Migros was the leading player in grocery retailers at the end of the review period with a 33% share of value sales, followed by its main competitor Coop with a 23% value share. These two retailers led supermarkets and hypermarkets in 2015, with Coop owning the major supermarket chain, whilst Migros is the leader in hypermarkets.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, grocery retailing in Switzerland is expected to revolve around three major strategic goals: discounting, differentiation and convenience. A strong emphasis on developing private label ranges in order to maintain low prices is a strategy which is expected to be embraced by most grocery retailers. Furthermore, focusing on organic food and drink and a wide fresh food assortment is likely to become a more common differentiation strategy for grocery retailers seeking to respond to growing health awareness among consumers. In addition, providing convenient options for consumers is also expected to remain on the agendas of many retailers. Finally, grocery retailers are expected to increasingly seek opportunities to harness the rise of internet retailing.
